About me
Hello! I am Max Yakovlev, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Operations Management at Vanderbilt University’s Owen School of Management, where I am fortunate to work with Dr. M. Eric Johnson. I hold a Ph.D. in Operations Management from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, where I had the privilege of being advised by Dr. Maria R. Ibanez.
I study how legislative, social, and technological contexts shape professionals’ workload and performance in service operations, particularly in healthcare. My job market paper examines the impact of travel nurse staffing, an emerging form of temporary and platform-based job matching in the healthcare labor market, on surgical operations, using rich hospital visit data and unique HR documentation. I employ econometric and machine-learning methods to inform practice and policy through data-driven findings.
My current projects with Vanderbilt University Medical Center include studies of patient feedback tracking for improved clinical outcomes and physicians' adoption of AI tools. My dissertation at Kellogg investigated how medical providers perform in the face of shifting legal landscapes and pressing social issues. I also collaborate with researchers at Columbia University and the University of Toronto to study how interhospital transfer decisions and timing affect care quality and patient outcomes.
